Love At First Sight or Just Hormones?

“It was love at first sight”

“I knew we’d be together from the moment I saw you”

Boy sees girl through a crowded place, they are caught locking eyes, music plays, wooing starts, they profess love for each other and everything breaks into dance and music (if you’re into Bollywood)..that was how the idea of love was defined growing up, at least for me through all the movies and loves stories.

So the question: Is it love at first sight or just hormones?

A study published at the University of Groningen revealed that love at first sight may actually be a “positive illusion.” Meaning, it’s just your brain sending chemicals to feel an instant attraction you towards a person at first glance.

Is it LOVE? Like in The Notebook, where Noah stays with Allison through her illness?

Probably not.

When you’re attracted to someone, there is another effect besides butterflies in your stomach takes place which is called the “halo effect”. Everything they do is coated with a blanket of “nothing could be wrong”

If they are late to meet you - “I’m sure traffic is bad”

If they forget your birthday - “Oh it’s fine. We can totally celebrate another day.

Point is, in your eyes they could never do anything wrong. Unfortunately, this comes with an expiration date. Once the butterflies leave your stomach and the halo starts to fade, you might find yourself having less in common with them than you remember. All those little habits you thought was cute suddenly feels a lot less cute.

It’s like you got used to the good looks and going in deeper, you realize there’s nothing much to keep you both on the same boat. You values, you beliefs and you idea of happiness. It’s not that either one is wrong, it’s just different.

You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most.
Nicholas Sparks

A relationship that lasts is a relationship that is built from friendship. You have a foundation so strong that you can pretty much build anything off it. You tend to enjoy each other’s company without any expectations because who doesn’t like hanging out with their best friend?

So the next time you see someone you’re reeaaalllyyy attracted to OR someone who’s not exactly “your type”, take the time to get to know them. You might find yourself in the journey of finding love.
It’s not a price to pay but an investment to make.

Falling in love should be calm and graceful, you would feel safe around that person; that's the feeling of love. And for that to happen, it will take time. When you find the right person, there wouldn't be a need to pretend to be someone you're not in hopes to impress them. In fact they will help you to see qualities in yourself that you never realized you have.
